DoodleSapiens #01 Millions try to cross the US border every year. Hoping for a better future. Many are under the age of 5. Yet some never see their parents again. Meet Carlos. He was born in Guatemala during a civil war. His parents decide to send their son with his Grandma Anne when he was 4 to Raleigh, North Carolina. Adapting was not easy. But it was safer. His parents did not have a cell phone to communicate. And it was expensive to talk in a phone booth. Also, Carlos did not learn to write or read in Spanish. But they made it work. It was important to stay in contact. Carlos mailed them his doodles. And they sent him baby pictures of him. This is how they communicated for many years. But Carlos still missed his parents. And it was dangerous to fly there. Lucky for him, he had Grandma Anne. She provided for all his needs. They became close. Carlos loved when Grandma Anne told him stories of his Dad. Who wanted to become a pilot. But had to forgo his dream to work in the fields. Carlos felt grateful his parents sent him to America. Where he had an opportunity to fulfill his dreams. And one day go to college. He wanted to become a videographer and travel around the world. The sacrifice was worth it. It was a few years later. During his last class of High School. While Carlos was doodling a volcano in his notebook. That he had this inspiration to go to Guatemala. The war was over. It was safer to visit. It was time. To visit home. After school, he came back home. Excited about planning his trip. He asked his 60-year-old Grandma if she could come with him. Tears came out from Grandma Anne's eyes. This was something she wanted to do for a long time. But could not find the time. Because of work, she always pushed it off. She had not visited in 35 years! Carlos and Anne hugged and cried. They felt gratitude. This trip will become a long-awaited reunion. No matter the circumstances that keep you apart. Family is forever.
