so this is i guess a serious question, i think the solution is simple if there is a problem but i just am wondering why nothing has already been done about it or why it's never mentioned. COPPA, Children's Online Privacy Protection Act no collecting of personal info of children 13 and under without parental consent allowed to be submitted and stored. personal info includes but is not limited to: email address, screen name, geolocation, hobbies/interests, photographs, video/audio files, along with persistent or anonymous identifiers such as IP address. i wonder if maybe the thought was that DeSo is not directed at children and that's why there is no need. however, one of the factors that determines that is: * the use of child celebrities or celebrities that are favored by children like: https://diamondapp.com/u/emmawatson https://diamondapp.com/u/taylorswift13 just to name 2. i think having unclaimed money there as a way to lure celebrities here qualifies as a use of that celebrity? and then things like: https://diamondapp.com/u/barbie https://diamondapp.com/u/spongebob other factors would be: - whether the business’s subject matter appeals to that age group - whether the business offers visual and audio content aimed at young children - the use of cartoon or animated characters https://diamondapp.com/u/mckennagraceful - just got curious about this profile. says "to claim this for free contact [email protected]". anyway this actress was born 2006? i mean if a child is a fan of that person and sees that there's some way to claim the profile, i wouldn't be shocked they would want to do that - call me crazy but that sounds like a reasonable thing to imagine. NFTs of cartoon-like characters probably make NFT marketplaces fall into this for sure, too, i would think. i asked @4down about his old website, he said of course he complied and that just meant specifically having a date of birth drop-down before allowing someone to submit any data that gets stored. and not giving like any indication ahead of time that if they pick a year that makes them 13 or under, that it won't allow them to proceed. so i guess that would be on the first profile update that it would be needed. but it's the blockchain that "collects" the data, and the blockchain has no idea if nodes enforce this properly. "If your business or website covers any subject matter that appeals to children 13 and under — or your service is used by sites that do — then you need to be fully compliant with COPPA." youtube only got fined like 200 million over this law a few years ago i think.. "if you collect personal information from only 10 children, but do not comply with COPPA, you could be fined up to $4,065,400!" i know some people have even created accounts for their kids, and so sure, maybe those children have parental consent, but their presence makes any site on DeSo automatically directed to children, and thus necessitates the need for privacy policies along with a method to collect the parental consent. i think? and then if any data is collected for any child, and anyone then uses that data in any reporting/etc., i think that is also a violation, so that could be important to note for some devs. maybe i'm worrying too much here, but i wouldn't want any devs to get in trouble because of this, though i'd also think DeSo being the collector of the data would need to adhere to this law also? unless DeSo is not a US company? and seems like at the least informing people of this need in the docs would be a good thing. (but really, it needs to somehow be a requirement right?) sorry if this is something that has already been covered, i searched the docs and main site for anything to do with this but didn't find anything.

right? i mean at least devs should want to be curious about it since it might affect things for them- i mean they should certainly be COPPA compliant on whatever they're building, i don't really know why there would be an exemption. nfts are clearly appealing to kids, besides ones with cartoon characters, many have been sold that were made by kids on this very platform. it's like just cause you're a Brony doesn't mean kids didn't like those ponies too.

There's a lot of regulations about content, privacy, and data collection that feel not quite figured out with social on the blockchain. COPPA is a great example, so are GDPR and CCPA with their right to be forgotten and the right to opt out of having their data sold. https://www.americanbar.org/groups/litigation/committees/minority-trial-lawyer/practice/2020/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-ccpa-and-the-european-unions-gdpr/ I think there are solutions but I don't hear anything from the core team about addressing them.

i feel like people who have invested may have already figured this out. @dharmesh - do you know if DeSo and apps running on it would be exempt from COPPA laws? my post (https://diamondapp.com/posts/23c2c4ce445abe0811f499b5c8c36ca66503eb9a3d46ab4da28c17f2d8b8733d) includes reasons why i would assume they're not exempt - well, obviously this is a US law, and i don't know where DeSo itself claims to be based out of. so maybe only certain nodes or apps need to be concerned. i just can't find anything in the docs or elsewhere that would help answer this.
